Review: Shadowfell by Juliet Marillier

Release Date: September 11, 2012
Publisher: Knopf Books for YR
Rating: YA 12+
Genre: Fantasy, Romance
Pages: 416

Sixteen-year-old Neryn is alone in the land of Alban, where the oppressive king has ordered anyone with magical strengths captured and brought before him. Eager to hide her own canny skill—a uniquely powerful ability to communicate with the fairy-like Good Folk—Neryn sets out for the legendary Shadowfell, a home and training ground for a secret rebel group determined to overthrow the evil King Keldec.

During her dangerous journey, she receives aid from the Good Folk, who tell her she must pass a series of tests in order to recognize her full potential. She also finds help from a handsome young man, Flint, who rescues her from certain death—but whose motives in doing so remain unclear. Neryn struggles to trust her only allies. They both hint that she alone may be the key to Alban’s release from Keldec’s rule.

Homeless, unsure of who to trust, and trapped in an empire determined to crush her, Neryn must make it to Shadowfell not only to save herself, but to save Alban.

Shadowfell landed up on my doorstep in May. And, me being the eager and die-hard Juliet Marillier fan that I am, finished it the day I got it. Now I wish I hadn't. Because I'm one of those people who has a really short-term memory loss, so as you can guess, I'd basically forgotten all about it. Which, of course, meant that I would have to reread it and all that jazz. Okay, enough of my random and useless thoughts...

Shadowfell started out slow. I mean, super, slow. Like as slow as I probably am during my Physical Education classes LOL. I was expecting a lot from this book, and I was majorly let down. I guess it's kind of my fault because I shouldn't have set such high expectations, but there you go. The only reason I finished it so fast was probably due to the fact that I kept hoping and wishing that it would get better, and in the end, it did, but not good enough to make up for it's terribly slow start.

Neryn was an okay character for me. Not that memorable, but also not the type of character I'd hate. Some things she did really annoyed the doodles out of me! I just couldn't wrap my mind around why she was so determined not to accept any help from anyone, and why she stuck around that crude and horrible father of hers for so long. I'm all for empowering and strong female (and male) characters, and Neryn was weak, kind of pathetic, and really watery, if you know what I mean.

While normally I'm a huge sucker for the mysterious, dark, edgy stranger, Flint just didn't do it for me. I liked how he was scary and real mysterious and all at the beginning, and how he opened up in the end, but it was really unbelievable for me. He was too kind, too sweet, too caring, and all for what? It just didn't make sense why he was willing to sacrifice so much for a random stranger he met just a few days ago.

The ending was probably my favorite part of the book, and (no, not just because it meant that it was almost over :P).  But because I got to see a side of Neryn and the whole world of Shadowfell that I thought I'd never see. Neryn, for once, was brave, courageous and strong. Flint, was, well, okay, still Flint. But it was really magical to see everyone, all the Shadowfell folk working together. And I was reminded of why I picked this book up in the first place, because of Marillier's beautiful writing.

So, in spite of all the problems I had with this book, the wonderful and magical words that Marillier always manages to string together is what made me give this book three muffins, not two. And, also the fact that I'm most probably going to read the sequel. I mean, gotta give Marillier some credit for that!

  1. I like your reference to how slow it was. ;) At least it wasn't as slow as ME exercising.

  2. Most reviews I've read of Shadowfell have been mediocre at best... it's too bad because I loved Juliet Marillier's Heart's Blood and Daughter of the Forest. :) I detest slow paced novels so I think I'll be skipping this one, then. :( Lovely review, Riya! Nicely said. :)

  3. I echo Leanne. I've only read Heart's Blood but I thought it was really good. Like I've found a good author I could depend on for good books. So, this is a little disappointing but we'll see if it lands on my doorstep :)

  4. Disappointed to see your review of this-I had read another disappointed review earlier and I have been hoping this will be excellent since I loved the previous two Marillier books I read :(

  5. Sorry this just wasn't that enjoyable for you, Riya. I hate it when I can't connect to the main character. And Flint just sounds strange and the romance sounds like instalove. Anyway, thanks for your honest review! :) xxx

  6. I might try this out! From the blurb it actually sounds quite good!

  7. I HATE slow starts! I like to be absorbed into the action straight away, and with slow starts I often end up forgetting about the book, reading another, and then maybe coming back to it. Maybe.

Not the mention how UTTERLY ANNOYING wimpy female leads are. Strong, independant females are what should be portrayed! Unless it's to do with characters development, or whatever. I just can't stand when the MC's rely on others for everything! Though it's great that Neryn came out at the end [though, that's usually a little too late].

I'm glad the writing wasn't a let down, though.(: Thanks for your wonderfully honest review, Riya!<3

  9. That is just too bad! I'm sure you wanted to like this and started it with the best intentions, but even your opening paragraph told me enough about this reading experience. Short term memory loss or not, one doesn't forget a mind-blowing book. I've heard so many amazing things about Marillier, and you're obviously a fan, but I think I'll start with something else.

  10. I'm sorry this one didn't go too well for you :(
Definitely know what you mean about slow starts though >_< Aren't they tiring?! Well, at least it got better towards the end (most books I've read with slow starts seem to do that o_o), and LOOOL, awww, I'm sure you're not that slow in P.E. because you haven't had a class with me XD

Do not like the sound of a watery female protagonist either. It's too bad the main characters fell flat for you in this one, but I've still heard how awesome this particular author is, so I still think I'll read a book by her! (I know, I haven't yet >_< EEE!!) Any recommendations for a first book?

Anyway, really great honest review! <3

  11. Shadowfell started out slow. I mean, super, slow. Like as slow as I probably am during my Physical Education classes

That just made me laugh! Don't worry, Riya, PE is useless where books are concerned, and that's all that matters. ;)

I'm sorry you weren't particularly blown away by this book. It does sound interesting but I haven't seen the best reviews for it. Still, it's a good sign that you still want to pick up the next book. I think I will have to pass on this one unless it turns up at my library or something. Lovely review! :)

  12. I already have my own finished copy of this one (the Dutch version was released so much earlier here, jeeeej. For once, it's nice to live International :p) and I'm currently reading it. I totally get the 'slow.. very slow' start. I feel like I need to drag myself through the beginning and I hate that. Marillier is one of my favorite authors and there is something magical about her books. The way she writes and all her words normally seems to flow. And her characters; they became so dear to me, but I don't have any connection with Neryn - yet, I hope.

I think I must set my expectations a little lower, because I hear a lot of negative things about this book. Such a shame, but I will be a die-hard Marillier fan. I owe that to hear after reading her previous books time after time <3

Oh gosh, now I keep talking and talking. I tend to do that when I'm enthusiastic about a book or an author. Well, I will just say that I liked your review and the honesty in it ^^

  13. "Like as slow as I probably am during my Physical Education classes" - Haha, Riya!

I'm sorry this was a let down for you, I have been told to read Juliet's books, I'm sure some of her others are better than this one?

  14. Aww...so sorry you were majorly let down with this book. Shame for the very slow start and weak and pathetic heroines. But I'm glad the ending kind of work for you, that it made you still want to read the next book. Maybe the next book would be better. Let's hope so. Great honest review, Riya! :)

  15. Oh, I am totally one of those people who suffer from short term memory loss - sometimes I forget what happened in a book within a week or two! Shameful, I know, but it gives me an excuse to go back and re read it and enjoy it all over again, which is a good thing, unless I didn't like the book.

Shame this one was a let down for you, I know now that when I pick up a Juliet Marillier book, I'll go for one other than this one.

    Lovely review, Riya :)

  16. YES SOMEBODY AGREES WITH ME! Lol I marked this as a DNF because the beginning was pretty much sooo slow and I just couldn't find the will to keep going :/ but I'm glad you liked the ending! :) And I'm sorry you forgot about it. I did that too with a book I have to review and now I'm putting it off even more because of how much I can't remember O_O Great review Riya! :)
