Review: My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

Release Date: June 14, 2012
Publisher: Dial Books
Rating: YA 14+
Genre: Contemporary, Romance, Realistic Fiction
Pages: 395

“One thing my mother never knew, and would disapprove of most of all, was that I watched the Garretts. All the time.”

The Garretts are everything the Reeds are not. Loud, numerous, messy, affectionate. And every day from her balcony perch, seventeen-year-old Samantha Reed wishes she was one of them . . . until one summer evening, Jase Garrett climbs her terrace and changes everything.

As the two fall fiercely in love, Jase's family makes Samantha one of their own. Then in an instant, the bottom drops out of her world and she is suddenly faced with an impossible decision. Which perfect family will save her? Or is it time she saved herself?

A dreamy summer read, full of characters who stay with you long after the story is over.

**An Advance Readers Copy was provided by the author (thank you so much!)**

This book was just the type of book I needed. Something I could fully immerse myself and get lost in. Let's just say, that my visit next door? Isn't one that I'll be forgetting about anytime soon.

While I love Contemporary novels, at heart I'm a Para girl. Hand me a book with werewolves, vampires, and things that don't exist, and I'm a happy camper! With Contemps, though, I'm super picky. They have to be really good for me to like them!

My Life Next Door was so much better than your average Contemporary read. Romantic, funny, witty and sweeter than PINK Cotton Candy (YES, that good), it tugged on my heart strings and captivated me till the very end. But I'm making it sound like this book was full of (admittedly yummy) FLUFF. But it wasn't just light and happy and all, there was some serious stuff going on! There was major suspense and drama and mystery. I had no idea it would end the way it did! I didn't expect it at all---and that's über rare for a Contemporary read!

You've definitely probably heard me say this, but a good book is only as good as it's characters, right? Well I loved every single one of the characters in this book! From the goofy Garretts, to the stoned yet lovable Tim, I fell head over heels in love with all of them. Especially Jase, the sweetest bad-boy I have EVER met. He has a leather jacket! Nuff said! Seriously, guys, I think I can hear wedding bells chiming in the distance...

And Sam, our sweet and quirky MC was a perfect narrator. I really felt for her! Guys, I think I can say, without any hesitation, that her mom was really messed up. All her mom cared about was winning the darn elections! I mean, she just had no clue what was going on in her daughter's lives, and she was dating a really cheap slop. Thank doodles Sam had the Garretts!

But I can't stand not mentioning the whole Garrett family, made up of eight children and two loving, affectionate parents. Loud, affectionate and messy, the Garretts were a stark contrast to Sam's family. And while Jase was definitely my favorite Garrett, George, Jase's five year old brother (who watched too much Discovery Channel for his own good) was a close runner-up! You have not truly understood pure cuteness until you meet George. So what are you waiting for? Go and read this amazing book! And give George a big huggle for me!!

My Life Next Door, while a fairly light and SUPER fun read, is also full of serious choices, suspense, and surprising edginess. Hands down, my favorite Contemporary read of 2012 so far!

  2. Great review! Like you, I am normally a paranormal person so I'm very picky with the contemporary books I read. This one has been on my radar for a while though and I keep hearing great things about it. I'll have to start it soon.

  3. I really really really need to read this book! It's been on my to-read list for FOREVER. I've heard that most people really loved the Garretts, they sound like people you can easily love. Great review! This must be a good one if you mostly only like Paranormal.

  9. I can be quite fussy when it comes to contemporary books too. I guess we have that in common! :) I'm glad you enjoyed this in the end, Riya. I feel like I know the Garretts pretty well already from all the reviews for this book that I've read. I can't wait to meet them properly though. Brilliant review hun! :)

  11. I loved all charaters as well. Also, the way she descriebed the relationship between Sam an Jase - something different when you compare it with lot of other YA books.

  12. Ooh, I love the sound of this! I'm the same with contemporary reads, they have to be REALLY good for me to like them, as it is not my favourite genre. Have you read The Fault in Our Stars? That's a comtemp but it sounds fabbylossibomb (yep... it's a word...).
Sam sounds awesome - I love quirky MCs :D Amazing review, as per usual, Riya! :)
PS. Thanks for the oh so lovely comment on my blog, I'm so happy to like it :D I've added yours to my blog roll too :) xx

  15. I've totally been on a contemporary kick lately and this one sounds like a book that I will LOVE. I like that there were so many layers to it; fluff, mystery and all that. I missed this one when it was on Netgalley and was totally kicking myself for doing so. Great review chickie!

P.S. Blue cotton candy is so much better than pink! :-P

  16. Well, sheesh, that is one awesome review. I love contemporary and I've been hearing a lot of rave reviews for this one, so I'm curious. I like anything with big families too, and it's usually rare to find in books...but movies like Yours, Mine, and Ours or Cheaper by the Dozen are always fun!

  17. Sweeter than PINK cotton candy? That exists? Lol! I ADORE the sound of this, and I think I may invest in a copy, seeing as it's been on my wishlist since FOREVER [okay, a few weeks]. I love contemp's, I'd say they're my favourites. But I'm also super picky about them. It won't put me off, I still LOVE them as fun reads, but to get a four star rating or above, they need to be so good! Usually contemp's get a 3.5 or 4. Yet they're still one of my favourite genres. :P

High five, a book is only as good as its characters.<3<3 I love how you worded that.(': Sam sounds so likable. Oooh, I really like the name Jase [or Jace]. :D

Wonderful review, Riya! As always. And how pretty is the cover of this?

  18. So happy to see you loved this one too, Riya! The Garretts were amazing and the romance between Jase and Sam was lovely! I just laughed when you called Grace's BF "a really cheap slop." Couldn't agree more. That mother is in line for the worst mother of the year award in my books! Wonderful review. :)

  19. Five stars?? A must read, then. :) So pleased that you enjoyed this one, Riya! It looks like the perfect, light and romantic read to immerse yourself while relaxing. :) I'm not too sure about the title, however. A bit cheesy for my taste..

    Lovely review!

  21. Ooh, this one does sound good. Like you, I'm picky about the Contemporary YA that I read, but I'm a sucker for romances that also feature great families. I'm going to be adding this one to my wishlist.
