Summer Is Here!

Hey guys!! :)

Summer is here and I'm sure many of y'all are leaving for your vacations now. I hope you guys have a fabulous time, whether you are flying halfway across the world, or are just relaxing at home and hogging the couch (one of my favorite pass-times!) :P

I just want to let you guys now that I am leaving tonight for Italy and Greece, and I won't be back until the 17th of July (around 3 weeks later), and I doubt I'll have any internet there, so it's goodbye for now. :(

Even though I'm super sad that I won't be able to post any new reviews, read your amazing reviews, or comment on your wonderful posts, or just chat about books with you guys, it's Summer, and just the thought of visiting two beautiful places that I've been wanting to visit for, like, EVER kind of makes up for it. :')

I just want to say that I hope you guys have the BEST Summer ever, full of sand, sun, ice cream, swoon-worthy book hotties, and, of course, daisies. :P The sky's your limit, so go and have an awesome time! I guess that's adieu for now, my lovelies!! I'll miss all of you so much! :')

Review: When You Were Mine by Rebecca Serle

Release Date: May 1, 2012
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Rating: YA 14+
Genre: Romance, Adaption, Contemporary
Pages: 334

In this intensely romantic, modern recounting of the greatest love story ever told, Romeo’s original intended—Juliet’s cousin Rosaline—tells her side of the tale.

What’s in a name, Shakespeare? I’ll tell you: Everything.

Rosaline knows that she and Rob are destined to be together. Rose has been waiting for years for Rob to kiss her—and when he finally does, it’s perfect. But then Juliet moves back to town. Juliet, who used to be Rose’s best friend. Juliet, who now inexplicably hates her. Juliet, who is gorgeous, vindictive, and a little bit crazy… and who has set her sights on Rob. He doesn’t even stand a chance.

Rose is devastated over losing Rob to Juliet. This is not how the story was supposed to go. And when rumors start swirling about Juliet’s instability, her neediness, and her threats of suicide, Rose starts to fear not only for Rob’s heart, but also for his life. Because Shakespeare may have gotten the story wrong, but we all still know how it ends…

**A copy was provided by Simon Pulse for review purposes (thank you so, so much!)**
Romeo and Juliet is often misinterpreted as the world's best, or most well-known love story, and it is, to some extent, but first and foremost, it's a tragedy. Serle reminds us of that in this mesmerizing adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. This book completely changed the way I look at Romeo and Juliet. Serle introduced so many new ideas and ways of looking at things that I had never really seen at all, and I completely bought into it, one hundred percent! Even if you're not a fan of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, still give this a go. You won't regret it.

Before reading this I (mistakenly) thought that Serle was just 'rewriting' Shakespeare's story completely, but that's SO not the case. What she actually does is breathe life into the magnificent story, and she makes it young again, so that us, the readers, can relive the beauty, magic, love and heartbreak of this time-old classic. I felt so many emotions while reading this novel it was ridiculous. I started feeling so protective over my favorite characters, and also such strong and powerful sensations towards the ones that I didn't like.

When You Were Mine doesn't really focus one Romeo and Juliet, but on Rosaline. You remember her, right? She was there before Juliet came and snatched away Romeo, and she was Romeo's first love. Rosaline is the main character in this book, and she has been in love with Rob (Romeo), her childhood friend and next-door neighbor since forever. They know each other inside out, their families are close friends, and as of recently, Rob has started showing an interest in being with her. It's meant to be, isn't it?? Destiny, fate, love. That's what Rosaline thinks.

But then, Juliet, Rosaline's cousin moves into town. Juliet, who used to be Rosaline's best friend when they were in pre-school. Juliet who also stopped being her friend for some reason after her family moved away. Juliet, whose parents hate Rob and Rosaline's parents, and whose families share a long history full of betrayals and blood. Still, when Juilet comes back, a part of Rosaline tells her to give her another chance. They were best friends once upon a time, after all, weren't they? So, Rosaline, being the friendly, open-minded, sweet character, (the type of character I love), tries to let her in to her group of friends. The 'popular people'. And Juliet is nicer to Rosaline than she has been ever since the move, and she seems to be really trying to mend their friendship. That, plus the fact that Rob just asked Rosaline to be his girlfriend, makes Rosaline giddy with happiness.

So, when Juliet asks Rosaline if she can 'borrow' Rob for the school dance, because she doesn't know anyone else, and also because Rosaline and her two best friends, Charlie and Olivia were planning to go to another party, sure Rosaline feels a little uncomfortable, but she can't find a reason to say no, especially when Juliet is finally showing some interest in rekindling their friendship. She can't think one night would matter that much. But, as Serle shows us, all it takes is one magical, horribly beautiful night, to change everything. Now, Rob is with Juliet, and Rosaline is left completely heartbroken.

You guys, I knew that Rob was going to get with Juliet, but I was still completely shocked and totally heartbroken (although no where even close to how heartbroken Rosaline was) when it happened. Because, Rob seemed like such a sweet guy!! He was polite, shy, cute, and really sweet!! I completely blame Juliet. From the very moment Rosaline began describing her cousin, I knew I was going to dislike her. But I never knew how deeply I would despise her!! As soon as she walked into the room (came into the story), I was like, seething mad. She totally ticked me off! And I really liked Rosaline as a character, so when Juliet treated her like shit, I actually swore out loud. And, I never swear. EVER. Only when, like, I'm really mad. :P

And I didn't expect to hate Juliet so much, because in Shakespeare's version, I always thought of her as helpless, and innocent, and madly in love. But in Serle's version, she knows exactly what she's doing, and she's vicious and deadly. Some characters I really liked were Charlie and Olivia, Rosaline's best friends. Charlie is strong, and a little bit bossy, but she's always there when you need her. Olivia is a little clueless sometimes, but she always sticks up for her friends, and she doesn't really care about what anyone thinks. I wish they were my friends!! And also, Len. Oh god, I love him!! Rob, or no Rob, after Len batted his long lashes at me, I was like 'Rob... Rob who??' LOL. :)

After reading When You Were Mine I just sat on my bed and stared out my window, not really seeing anything. Serle made me relive all of the beautiful moments of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, also adding in some amazing moments herself, that actually made me understand and appreciate the sadness,  beauty, and love of an already amazing story more than I did before. I devoured this book in one sitting, and, even though I was left so close to bawling like a baby after I finished it, I'm not at all sorry. Because it was a good type of sadness, if you know what I mean. I look forward to reading more of Serle's work, and when her next book comes out, I will most definitely be there, front of the cue!!!

Waiting on Wednesday (12)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine. It's to spotlight books I'm just DYING to get my hands on!!

                                             This weeks WoW is...
Waverly and Kieran are finally reunited on the Empyrean. Kieran has led the boys safely up to this point, and now that the girls are back, their mission seems slightly less impossible: to chase down the New Horizon, and save their parents from the enemy ship. But nothing is truly as it seems…Kieran’s leadership methods have raised Seth’s hackles— and Waverly’s suspicions. Is this really her fiancé? The handsome, loving boy she was torn from just a short time before? More and more, she finds her thoughts aligned with Seth’s. But if Seth is Kieran’s Enemy No. 1, what does that make her?

In one night, a strange explosion rocks the Empyrean—shooting them off course and delaying their pursuit of the New Horizon—and Seth is mysteriously released from the brig. Seth is the most obvious suspect for the explosion, and Waverly the most obvious suspect for releasing him. As the tension reaches a boiling point, will Seth be able to find the true culprit before Kieran locks them both away—or worse? Will Waverly follow her heart, even if it puts lives at risk? With the balance of power precarious and the clock ticking, every decision counts… every step brings them closer to a new beginning, or a sudden end...

Review: Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Release Date: January 3, 2012
Publisher: Feiwal & Friends
Rating: YA 12+
Genre: Dystopian, Sci-Fi, Fairytale, Fantasy, Romance
Pages: 387

Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, the ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl. .

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.
Wow. Right now I'm just staring at my Computer screen trying to figure out how on earth I am going to put how much I loved Cinder into words. Guys, if you haven't read this fabulous debut, go out and read it. Now.

I kind of knew that I would love it before I started it, mostly because of all the rave reviews about it in the blogging community. Mimi, one of my blogging BFFs and reviewer extraordinary, loved Cinder, which made me even more excited to read it than I was before!!

"A mixture of both fairytale and dystopian elements with a supernatural twist, Cinder is a mesmerizing debut that you don't want to miss! This is one of those books that I'd recommend to everybody because I honestly believe that it can be enjoyed by anyone who can read!" - Mimi Valentine

Mimi has such a way with words, no?? <3

And not only because of all the raving reviews, but because the premise sounded so fascinating, and Cinderella is probably my favorite fairytale ever. Something about her story just resonates with me, I guess. I mean, hard work, dedication, a prince, a fairy god mother, and a carriage made out of a pumpkin?? What's not to love about it? ;) What really surprised me, after reading Cinder, was that it made me love Cinderella's story even more than I did before, which I didn't even think was possible.

For me, fairytale re-tellings can go two ways. I either love them, or hate them. Cinder was perfect. Marissa created such an intricate and fascinating world full of Cyborgs, lovable characters, a charming Prince, and twisted moon people. I fell in love with Cinder's world right from the very start. Now, I don't know if it's because of all the books I read or something, but it normally takes me quite some time to get properly sucked into the novel, but Cinder did it right away. I was hooked after reading the very first four pages! Meyer definitely has a gift with words, and I will read anything by her, any day!

I have to admit, I was a little worried that Cinder was going to completely rip-off my beloved fairytale by adding in Cyborgs, and moon-people, and androids and what-not, but it  did not at all. If anything, all the twists Meyer put into the book made it so unique and different from any other re-tellings I have ever read!

All of the characters are so unique, especially Cinder. She's lovable, quirky, and has a wicked sense of humor, all the while still remaining an under dog, which drew me to her from the very start. Whereas in the original fairytale, Cinderella was hard-working, resilient, polite, and caring, in this retelling, Meyer incorporates all of those traits into her heroine, but also gives her some major spunk and spirit, that I personally believe was missing in the original Cinderella. Cinder was a totally kick-ass heroine!!

The romance was a little cliche, and expected, but I have no complaints at all! Prince Kai was such a great Prince! And sometimes, it actually pays off to stick to the cliches, because some of them are too beautiful and magical to change.

An amazing, mind-blowing re-telling of the beloved fairytale of Cinderella, with spunk, wit, humor, and epic-ness that you won't want to miss out on! Meyer is a friggin genius!

Review: Just Flirt by Laura Bowers

Release Date: June 19, 2012
Publisher: Farrar, Strauss and Giroux
Rating: YA 14+
Genre: Contemporary, Realistic Fiction, Romance
Pages: 325

It’s summer, sweet summer! Self-proclaimed Superflirt Dee Barton can’t wait to spend it practicing her Nine Rules of Flirting on all the cute guys who come to stay at her family’s campground. Why not? Flirting is fun and makes everyone involved feel good—which is pretty much the exact opposite of her relationship with her toxic ex-boyfriend, Blaine.

Sabrina Owens’s summer plans include keeping her over-the-top karaoke DJ mother in check, maintaining her status as the queen of the popular crowd—and being the perfect girlfriend to Blaine. Both girls see each other as the enemy. But when a secret blog embroils them in a frivolous lawsuit, they must team up and embark on a risky, flirt-filled plot to set things right again…and maybe prove they’re not so different after all.

Laura Bowers’s new novel is a heartfelt and hilarious story of friendship, family…and flirting!

**This review is based on an Advance Reader Copy (thanks so much, Laura!)**
Just Flirt is the perfect way to kick off your Summer holidays. Full of flirting (duh!), cute guys, bikinis, and a whole lot of drama, this will leave you wishing your Summer holidays would be as adventurous as this, but also kind of thankful that they're not... I wish I had even half of the spunk that the girls in this book have!!

Ever since Dee Barton's dad died in a spontaneous and out-of-the-blue heart attack, it has just been Dee and her mom left to run the Campground. And even though it was difficult at first, now the Campground is Dee's home, and she loves hanging out there and helping her mom run it.

A few years back, something happened to Dee that made her lose her A-Class status. Something involving a very desperate, heartbroken Dee, a cute, hot jerk, and a letter. After Dee wrote THAT letter, everything changed for her. No one wanted to be her friend, except for 'Nose Pick Natalie'.  Both Dee and Natalie met their downfalls because of Sabrina, the ice queen, and all-around pretty and popular gal of the school... and Sabrina just happens to be dating that cute, hot jerk who Dee was with before.

Sabrina is your typical blond, skinny cheerleader who rules the school... with a twist. Her mom, is not... let's say... your average mom. She dresses like a teenager, and actually kind of thinks she is one. She can never keep a boyfriend (or a job, for that matter), for more than a month. Still, she tries, and her latest endeavor involves Karaoke, and a whole lot of jiggling dancing. And her latest job just happens to be at Dee's campground, which can't possibly end well, what with Dee and Sabrina being worst enemies...

I love and admire Dee so much. Not only is she awesome at flirting, and has way more courage than I do, but she's also really nice and sweet, and loyal to her friends. When that hot jerk of a guy, Blaine dumped her, at first she was really desperate and confused, thus the letter, but after that she realized that he was no good and just moved past him without even looking back. Sabrina, on the other hand, is basically where Dee was a couple of years ago. She's going out with Blaine, but BOY do they have problems. And Sabrina really wants to work things out, but a part of her tells her to just go along with it because then they can be the perfect 'A-List' couple and all that shit (OMG excuse my swearing) ;). Ugh. I felt like shouting at her to grow a spine, woman!!

And her mom was seriously too funny. I'm so glad that my mom doesn't go parading around in mini-skirts and all!! LOL. I felt really bad for Sabrina for having to put up with her. But at the same time, sometimes I felt like she should've just stood up to her mom and said no! There was definitely A LOT of face-palming involved on my part. :P

Just Flirt was such a fun, and touching read that really got me all pumped up for my hols... I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I think teen girls all around the world will love this witty, smart, funny and sweet read too!
